Treatment of Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism is traditionally treated with something called ‘thyroid hormone replacement therapy’. As the name suggests, it is something about replacing the lacking hormone in the body. Fortunately, we can supply the lacking hormone that thyroid gland is not able to produce or producing but in very less amount than the body’s requirement.
Thyroid hormone replacement therapy could include taking T4, T3 or a combination product of having both of those hormones. All of these treatments work in the body just like thyroxine, the human hormone that is generally produce by the thyroid gland, and subsequently gets converted into T3, an active form of the hormone.
Broadly, hypothyroidism condition can be treated with thyroid hormone tablets or supplements, iodine (especially for the treatment of goiter if appropriate) and a special treatment for something called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
Apart from modern medicines, there are various other ways to treat hypothyroidism condition with the help of alternative therapies. Alternative therapy experts try to resolve the underlying causes of poor health rather than just simply targeting and curing the symptoms. According to them, poor nutrition is probably the origin of many of the thyroid problems especially the low thyroid problem. It is therefore considered that rich nutrition can reverse the situation or al least can prevent it not inviting the further complications.
Alternative therapy experts also believe that stress in all its forms is another proven culprit giving rise to thyroid dysfunction. Most of the people experience a high degree of the most damaging thing – unremitting stress. It is therefore, becomes necessary to identify the stressors or the factors that trigger the stress and then to avoid them for better thyroid gland functioning.
Consuming foods that are naturally having vitamin B complex is good for general health and so for thyroid. One can include fresh nuts and seeds, whole grains and iodine (rich source is fish, seaweed, root vegetables and other vegetables). They also suggest performing light exercises on a daily basis for the period of ½ hr to an hour. However, you can take rest on Sundays.
Many naturopaths suggest having adequate sunlight exposure. Sunlight is a natural germ killer and body rejuvenator. Tender sunlight in the morning provides health to the body. It also helps maintaining vitamin D levels that support healthy immune function and calcium metabolism. Maintaining good hygiene, living in happy and stress-less environment can really help overcoming thyroid malfunctioning.
Some of the Southeast Asians believe in acupuncture and acupressure techniques that basically belong to tradition of Chinese healthcare system. Naturopathic medicines, homeopathic medicines, biofeedback and osteopathy are also considered as safe and effective remedies that can help brining thyroid into its normal condition.
In some countries like India, its traditional medical science called Ayurveda also narrates wonderful therapies and drugs that work specifically on hypothyroidism. Some of them claim that a special purification therapy of the body called ‘Panchkarma’ is able to remove toxins from the body and hence can restore the hormonal levels in the body.
